This week, Punxsutawney Sisolak unveiled a shadowy plan to reopen Nevada in phases. The governor announced that we won’t enter “phase one” until we see fourteen days of decline in covid cases, which means we will remain in “phase zero” for at least a few more weeks.

The curve is flattening. So who gets the credit? Here’s a theological answer.

There has been some good news recently. We have been staying at home, wearing masks, and our healthcare workers have been working tirelessly to fight the pandemic. And the curve is flattening.
So who gets the credit for this?
NY Governor Andrew Cuomo offered his opinion in a CNN interview a couple days ago. He said, “Our behavior has stopped the spread of the virus. God did not stop the spread of the virus. What we do, and how we act, will dictate how that virus spreads.”

The True Meaning of Good Friday and Easter, Resurrected

This weekend, Christians celebrate the historical events that launched our movement. We begin with “Good Friday,” the ironically named remembrance of Jesus’ death. (How is that good, exactly? Some people wonder.) We conclude with Easter, the celebration of Jesus’ death-defeating resurrection that is dubiously named and has been co-opted by an omnipresent bunny and wicker baskets filled with armies of Peeps.

An Antidote to Anxiety

I don’t know about you, but the past couple weeks have not been relaxing for me. Caitlin and I have three energetic kids under the age of six and began major home renovations shortly before the pandemic. Then suddenly, life became more complicated. Ministry had to evolve rapidly. The kids are home. Always. Plus, Caitlin is an ER nurse and now going to work is a courageous act.

But we already knew that.

The end times actually began centuries ago. Long before this pandemic. Long before you and I. And the end times might last centuries beyond us. Long after this pandemic. Long after you and I. We don’t know. All we know is that we are in fact living in the last chapter of history, awaiting the glorious epilogue.

The Future of Hope

A month ago I toured Israel. I was immersed in Christianity’s past. The biblical sites. The world-changing events. God’s activity in history was vivid.

On the trip, my group from Northern Seminary weaved through crowded streets with thousands of other travelers. We hugged and shook hands. We brushed shoulders with pilgrims from across the world who lined up to kiss holy sites, one after another with no regard for germs.
